@mark - 22% is slightly concerning and thanks for the browser market share recommendations

@ian - like your statement of browser compatibility, thanks for sharing!

Just a minor point - those W3 Schools browser stats are for their own website and as such are not representative of the market share of browsers as a whole (that site is focussed around web dev and the people that visit it are much more likely to be on a better browser, so the results are pretty skewed).

A much better overall view comes from net applications:

Browser market share: http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=0
Browser version market share: http://marketshare.hitslink.com/browser-market-share.aspx?qprid=2&qptimeframe=M&qpsp=130&qpct=3&qpmr=5

Which pegs IE 6 at 22 percent(ish) currently, nearly a quarter of general web traffic still. Ouch.

Ongoing Vista / Windows 7 should further help matters, as IE6 is simply a no-go there..

The get-out I used on the most recent spec. document I wrote was something along the lines of:

The site will be tested for compatibility with the majority of current browsers, including Firefox 2.x -3.5, Safari 2.x – 4.x, Google Chrome, Opera 10, Internet Explorer 7 – 8. No guarantee of visual consistency can be made on legacy browsers older than 5 years.

.. which I think is fair enough. If customers have an issue with that, I usually engage in a discussion as to what point they would consider it unrealistic to continue offering support for their own products. When put in that context, IE6 is often given the heave-ho..
